Surfskater Portraits
Surfskating exhibition
I exhibited 40 portraits using a range of photographic techniques including long exposure, black & white, multiple exposures, stroboscopic effects, gobos, gels, and even a mirror that I brought to skateparks for some imaginative sessions. It was an absolute joy to spend time with these incredible individuals, and capture their surfskate love.
The models featured in this project played a crucial role on my growth as a photographer. When I first started in studio photography, I used to practice my lighting techniques on a plastic mannequin. While it was helpful initially, it quickly became dull and uninspriring. That's when I reached out to some friends from the Concrete Waves surfskate group in London to model for me. It turned out to be an amazing training opportunity, with eager models ready to pose for me for months. Eventually, the idea of having an exhibition was proposed a few times, and that's when the seed was planted.
In the studio I experimented with different techniques to ensure that each portrait had its own special touch. Being familiar with the subjects made it easier to make them feel at ease and to create a comfortable and trusting atmosphere. While I mostly worked alone, on this project I did ask for help from my amazing friend Eva who is also a photographer, for the more challenging setups.
Thanks to Andrew Mason's valuable advice, I managed to secure a gallery space. Excitedly, I invited Julia and Nuno to join me in this amazing exhibition, and I was thrilled when they both agreed to! Our vision was to create a surfskate and surfing themed exhibition. Nuno had his photos printed and shipped from Portugal, while Julia had hers prepared by her trusted printer in London.
Just a week before the event, our friend Alex shared a photo of a fantastic surfboard. I immediately inquired where he got it, and to my surprise, he revealed that he had shaped it. It turns out Alex is a talented surfboard shaper. Without hesitation, we asked him to showcase his incredible surfboards at the exhibition, and he happily agreed. A big shoutout to him for making the long journey from Cornwall, with a car full of boards and blanks, arriving just in time for the grand opening!
Throughout the span of 5 days, as we greeted guests entering our gallery, a feeling of achievement swept over us. The happiness and enthusiasm shown by friends and visitors as they explored our one-of-a-kind and cheerful art pieces was truly touching. We are all very proud of what we accomplished.
Exhibiting artists
Julia a surfer, skater, photographer, and traveler, she was the first surfskater I photographed for this project. She holds a unique standing in this exhibition, being featured both as a model and a photographer. Her exceptional talent was evident in the 12 breathtaking photographs she contributed with. It's no wonder her stunning work was showcased also at the esteemed London Photo Show 2023 later in the year.
Nuno and I have been friends for more than 25 years, bonding over our shared passion for basketball, which we used to play with our brothers, we both eventually got into surfing, although at different times. Nuno's action photos are outstanding, he collaborates with remarkable athetles amateurs or pros. To the exhibition he showcased images of big wave surfing at Nazare and hollow barrels from The Perfect chapter surf contest in Lisbon. Nuno's portfolio is truly exceptional.
Alex effortlessly excels at surfing, skating, photography, and shaping surfboards using eco-friendly materials. His unique surfboard designs piqued the interest of everyone, and we were all eager to learn more about his ideas for a better sustainable industry. Tackling these important issues takes courage and vision, and Alex confronts them with a can-do attitude, talent, and perseverance.
